1. I printed and cut out a couple of simple shapes for my appliques. I chose these shapes because the shower is for my TurboKick instructor ;)
So I had a baby shower this weekend and needed a gift. I have been in "headband" mode. However; my girlfriend is not finding out the sex of her baby.....so no flowery headband. A couple of weeks ago I had seen these cute onesies at a little shop and decided, "I can make those" :) Here is what I did (I am trying to get better at remembering to take step-by-step photos...) 1. I printed and cut out a couple of simple shapes for my appliques. I chose these shapes because the shower is for my TurboKick instructor ;) 2. Trace the images onto the back side of a piece of baby flannel and cut out. For this particular design I decided to use some ribbon as well. 3. I tied a bow with my ribbon and hand stitched it to the baby onesie. Next I machine sewed the boxing gloves to the onesie. I used a contrasting color thread to make the outline of the gloves stand out.

Here is yet another headband experiment. This one is less, "whimsical" and more "structured".
Headband: 1. Cut a strip of fabric about 3/4 of the way around your head. Hem if desired. I used a non-stretch cotton. 2. Sew a small piece of elastic to each end of the headband strip to go the rest of the way around your head. Flower: 1. Cut out small circles of a variety of sizes. I used two different cotton prints in coordinating colors. 2. Use the largest circle for the bottom of the flower. Layer the rest of the circles on top, folding some in thirds and some in half. 3. Sew flower pieces to headband with a needle and thread, starting from the back of the headband. Here is a baby headband I made out of old t-shirt scraps...nice and soft for baby :)
1. Cut a strip for the headband (about 2" by the circumference of your head). Sew together in a circle 2. Cut out small (about 1" circumference) circles for the flowers. 3. Fold circles into fourths (makes like a triangle shape) 4. Tack folded circles to headband. A few small stitches in the point of the "triangle". Place them close together, going every which way :) My very first post to my very first blog!! I have been wanting to do something productive now that my masters program is complete (and I guess planning a wedding isn't enough) ;-) So here is my attempt at organizing all of my "trial and error" crafting endeavors.... enjoy, advise welcome!
Here are some rough directions for this headband: 1. Cut and sew a piece of elastic the size of your dome. ( I used a thin cotton) 2. Take a long strip of fabric (about 2 inches by 25 inches) and sew a hem on each side of the long length of the fabric. 3. The next step is tricky... I just folded and twisted the fabric onto itself in random fashion until it resembled a flower. I was pinching the center the entire time. When finished I held it together with a clothespin. 4. Thread a needle and sew up and down through the center of the flower onto the piece of elastic until secure. 5. Press the flower with an iron. |
